A serious message to Trump supporters: Trump is Boss Hogg, not Bo Duke

The 80’s TV series the Dukes of Hazzard was successful partly because it tapped into America’s well know love of rebels, with two good hearted “good ol’ boys” standing up to a corrupt local political system run by Boss Hogg.

Trump has successfully tapped into the same feelings, with his promises to “drain the swamp” and reverse “elitist” policies. These include globalism, that has encouraged the drop in relatively high paying American manufacturing jobs and promoting immigration, which is rapidly changing the “face” of America: to the discomfort of people who liked the face just the way it was.

I can sympathize with the support of rebels. I can sympathise with concern over rapid changes that seem to benefit only a relatively small proportion of Americans while harming the rest. I can even sympathize with concern over letting in waves of immigrants who may change America, although I am concerned over the racist overtones.

But in Trump, you good ol’ boys have fallen for a con. Trump isn’t the good hearted Duke boys. He doesn’t bend the law to stand up to a corrupt establishment and help the little guy. Trump’s whole history shows that he bends the law to make himself rich, often at the expense of the little guy. Trump’s an outsider and a “rebel” alright, but of the self-serving kind. Trump is Boss Hogg.

So ask yourself: when did I start idolizing Boss Hogg? Then go out and search for a Bo Luke who will drain the swamp and not replace it with another playground for the rich and privileged.
